Professional style isn’t built in a day—it’s crafted piece by piece.
I have had a favourite habit of buying professional clothes, once a month (usually on a Friday) and it is always only one piece, one outfit, or one set. This is my approach to building a professional wardrobe which makes my getting ready for work mornings easy, every single day.
Some of my go to shops in the UK have been and still are: H&M, New Look, Zara, and Primark. They all have a dedicated professional section. This makes it easier for me to find office-ready pieces without having to look through casual wear. Also, I don’t need to go through this time consuming hassle question…Is it professional, is it not?
These stores offer a range of affordable yet stylish options, so you can build a professional wardrobe on budget. Zara often has sleek, modern pieces, while H&M and New Look provide versatile basics. Primark, known for its affordability, can also surprise you with professional staples. In the pictures of this post for example, I am wearing a mix and match from the stores named above on budget.
Additionally, every time I shop, I imagine myself in a professional setting, like a seminar filled with career professional. I ask myself…would I wear this in my next seminar in London? If the answer is yes, then I purchase…
This is how I keep building my professional image: step by step, I evolve, I live in the present, I follow current trends. I do so, always, in line with my values, personal style, and my body shape.
My signature work style…
I came up with my essential / signature winter work style (it is a bit cold in the UK..I am sorry..) so that I can meet my daily morning needs when I am in a hurry and I still want to look elegant but also comfortable when working.
- Knee length skirts OR trousers OR a dress
- Den tights
- Collar shirt OR blouse
- Closed toe heels OR platform ankle boots
- White pearl earrings.
Essential or Signature work style is something that combines speed, comfort, elegance and “it’s you” ( ….it has to also meet individuals’ work dress code requirements). Investing some time to find your ‘Signature style’ for work is a rewarding investment as it is quick to get ready but also aesthetically pleasing.
My advice…
Building a wardrobe—and a professional image—is a journey, not a race. Focus on quality over quantity, and always choose pieces that resonate with your personality and values.
Each time you shop, picture yourself in the settings you aspire to be in, surrounded by the people you hope to connect with.
